It is tempting to arrange professional skin technologies on a simple scale from weak to strong. In practice, that can be misleading. IPL, Thulium, Erbium Glass and CO₂ interact with tissue differently and are useful for different treatment objectives.

IPL remains valuable where broad-spectrum light and filter selection give practitioners flexibility across concerns such as photorejuvenation, superficial pigmentation and visible redness.

Fractional 1927nm Thulium moves into a more controlled skin-renewal role, particularly where pigmentation, tone, brightness, pores and superficial texture are priorities.

At the other end of the spectrum, ablative 10,600nm CO₂ laser has an important role where more intensive resurfacing is appropriate and the patient accepts a correspondingly greater recovery commitment.

The useful question is therefore not whether Thulium is “better” than IPL or CO₂. It is whether the patient's concern and appetite for downtime make Thulium the right treatment category in the first place.

Depending on the treatment parameters and individual response, patients may experience temporary warmth, redness, dryness or light flaking following treatment. The degree and duration of that response varies with the protocol being performed.

This matters commercially, but perhaps not in the way some equipment marketing suggests. The advantage is not simply that a clinic can book more treatments. It is that the practitioner has another meaningful option for patients who may otherwise decline laser resurfacing because the expected downtime does not fit their work, family or social commitments.

That can make Thulium particularly useful within a treatment pathway where patients move between lighter skin treatments and more intensive resurfacing according to their concern and expectations.

Machine comparisons often begin with wavelength, maximum energy and system size. Those specifications matter, but only once the clinic has worked out what it wants the machine to do.

A clinic introducing low-downtime pigmentation and skin-renewal treatments has a different requirement from one building a broader laser programme around pigmentation, acne scarring, texture and collagen remodelling.

Space matters too. So does whether the system needs to move between rooms, whether specialist treatment functionality is required and whether the clinic already owns technologies such as CO₂, IPL or RF Microneedling.

Thulium Laser Pro Dual™

The Dual is the most logical choice where a clinic wants its fractional laser platform to extend beyond the more superficial role of 1927nm Thulium.

Adding 1550nm Erbium Glass creates a second treatment pathway for concerns such as acne scarring, deeper texture, fine lines and collagen remodelling, while retaining 1927nm for pigmentation, tone, brightness, pores and superficial renewal.

That makes it the broadest skin-rejuvenation system in the range, but it does not automatically make it the right purchase for every clinic. If the additional treatment depth will rarely be used, a dedicated 1927nm system may remain the more sensible investment.

Adding a new laser rarely happens in isolation. Most established clinics already have technologies that cover at least part of the same patient journey.

If you already offer IPL, Thulium can create a more focused fractional treatment route for patients concerned with pigmentation, tone, pores and texture.

If you already offer CO₂, Thulium can give you another option for patients who are not ready for the intensity or recovery associated with deeper resurfacing.

If RF Microneedling is already central to the clinic, the distinction may be between an RF-led collagen-remodelling treatment and a wavelength-specific fractional laser approach to pigmentation, tone and texture.

That is why we would not choose a Thulium platform by asking which one has the longest treatment list. The useful question is: what gap does it fill in the treatment menu you already have?

Fractional laser treatment requires more than learning where the controls are. Practitioners need to understand how wavelength, energy, density, treatment technique, patient selection and expected skin response change the treatment being performed.

That becomes even more important with a dual-wavelength system. 1927nm Thulium and 1550nm Erbium Glass have different treatment roles, so practitioner training should make that distinction clear rather than treating them as interchangeable settings on the same machine.
